Although Jim was raised on Narragansett Bay near the Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts and Marilyn is from Western Oregon, together we found our home in the Green Mountains of Vermont.  We set out to find a place in the country on a dirt road, with enough land to build a pottery studio.  We wanted to hear the birds sing, to see the sunset in the evening and the stars at night, and to cross-country ski from our front porch.  When we finally found all that, on a wooded hillside, along with a covered bridge down the road and a swimming hole nearby, we thought we were dreaming.

We documented and photographed the wildlife on our land, so we designed and made bird feeders and birdbaths.  We cultivated vegetables, fruit trees, and berry bushes, and began making pieces to cook and serve the food we were harvesting. We planted flowers everywhere and then created a variety of vases to use with those flowers.

So over time, the pottery we make has evolved, and our glazes have changed. Our sense of design is ever more influenced by function—by the desire to make things that look beautiful and feel good and work well every day. The surfaces of our pieces are more organic. Our glaze palette has softened into the warm greens, blues, russets, and bronzes we see around us as the seasons change. Our life in tranquil Vermont has shaped us as artists, designers, and potters in ways we never could have imagined.
